The Average FUTO Student Acceptance to Social and Entrepreneurship Related Activities

Federal University of Technology Owerri , has been known and has always been recommended as one of the best Universities of Technology in Nigerian.

Once you are a FUTO student, it is believed that you are knowledgeable to an extent, and FUTO students have always been well accepted outside and after school, not only for the fact that it is not easy to make good grades in FUTO compared to some other schools, but also for the fact that FUTO as a university of Technology, gives so  much academic training to it’s students, by making  FUTO undergraduates to spend compulsory five years in the school irrespective of your department.

The course center for entrepreneurship studies was lately introduced to the school in 2013, and has been made a school course for three hundred (300) level Students. But how many FUTO undergraduates are already entrepreneurs or willing to go into entrepreneurship after graduation.

The school hardly encourages social activities.

The daily activities of a mediocre FUTO student are mainly going for lectures, practical and for some Students Church, to return to his/her lodge or hostel.

Student’s leisure is mostly watching or playing of football, watching of movies and playing games. While very few involve themselves in entrepreneurship related activities, or try to acquire knowledge outside their course of study.

The fresher/award night that is made to happen only during the second semester of every academic session, which only gets poor number of attendance from students is now being cancelled by some departments.

Lately a seminar was held at the school, titled “web splash” which lasted for three days, teaching students how to design a website and develop android application.

The organizers, took weeks to create good publicity for the event, ranging from going to various lecture halls to inform student about the seminar, messages were steadily sent to not  less than three hundred students (300) before the date of the seminar, and posters were pasted all round the school.

which the sum of three thousand naira (N3000) payment, makes each student eligible to attend either web design or android application development class, and paying five thousand naira (N5000) qualifies a student to attend both.

It was not satisfactory that not more than thirty students attended the seminar, compared to when it was done at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) showing the very low rate, FUTO students respond to skill acquisition.

It’s nice students are working hard for academic excellence, but in our country Nigeria today, being a graduate is not enough, there is need for students to develop their self the more, acquire skills, become successful entrepreneurs inorder to be Job creators not seekers.
